Lower back pain myths? Who do we listen too?
Think those myths help your lower back pain? Hmmm think again!
Lower back pain myths can truly hurt how to take care of yourself. !Chronic pain in the lower portion of your back is one of the most common ailments in the world. So many people – from teenagers to the elderly – are walking around with a sore back. No doubt they’ve seen various ‘specialists’ or conducted their own research, which usually leads to the discovery of many myths.
This is a contributed post.
The problem with something like chronic back pain is that there are loads of things spoken about it that just aren’t true at all. But, when you’re in pain, you want to try everything. This leads to you spending money on things that will never work, which leaves you in as much pain as you were, but with less money in your pocket.
So what are the lower back pain myths?
So, this guide will look at some of the biggest myths about chronic lower back pain, to help you avoid making the same mistakes that others have unfortunately done.
Lower back pain indicates a problem with your back
Naturally, you assume that pain in your lower back means there’s an issue with your back itself. However, this isn’t always the case, and the majority of chronic back pain is caused by problems from muscles in the surrounding areas.
If you’ve ever had physical therapy on your back, then the chances are you know this already. Physical therapists are great at identifying what’s causing your pain, and it tends to come from the hips.
Tight hip flexor muscles on the front of your leg, along with tight muscles in the high hip, will cause a massive imbalance in the lower back region.
What happens is your hip flexors pull on your lumbar spine, which tilts the pelvis forward. This also causes your glute muscles to weaken, along with your abdominals. The result is a lower back that arches a lot and is under constant strain.
As such, you get that nagging back pain which often kicks in when you’ve been standing up for too long.
There are cases where back pain is directly related to issues in your back – such as bulging discs, muscle strains, or impact injuries. But, don’t always assume that chronic pain means you need to fix your back, it’s often the hips that need sorting out.
Soft tissue work & stretching will fix your pain for good, lower back pain myth!
When you have back pain, it’s normal to seek out massages or find stretches to help heal the pain. If you’ve been led to believe the first myth, then you probably massage your back or stretch it out a lot. But, even if you know the problem lies elsewhere, you still assume that massaging and stretching the problem areas will sort you out.
In reality, this will help you, but the effect is temporary. Soft tissue work and stretching will help get rid of the pain you’re feeling right now. However, if the cause of the pain isn’t adequately addressed, then it will just keep coming back. Typically, you need a proper rehab plan to follow that targets your specific cause.
What’s more, you should stop bad habits which are making the pain come back over and over again. For example, a lot of back pain is caused by a terrible posture from sitting too much. So, if you keep on sitting for hours a day and maintain poor posture, then your back pain will just keep coming back. You must address the cause if you want permanent freedom from your pain!

You need to strengthen your lower back muscles, lower back pain myth
This comes in conjunction with the myth about your back being the issue with the pain. People assume that you need to strengthen something if it hurts, so it’s strong enough to deal with the pain and prevent it.
The logic isn’t too far fetched, and there are instances where strengthening your lower back can help your pain – but it’s incredibly rare.
In most cases, chronic lower back pain is caused by the imbalances mentioned earlier. This often means that your lower back is continually being overworked.
So, the issue has nothing to do with strength as it’s always working and the muscles are firing! If you keep strengthening it, then you’ll just make the problem worse and add fuel to the fire.
If you’ve been trying to strengthen your back, and your pain has either got worse or not gone away, then this means the problem is likely to do with the hips – as I touched upon before. Instead of strengthening the back, strengthen the weak areas (glutes and abdominals) while working on relieving the pressure on the back.
The pain will go away eventually, lower back pain myth!
Perhaps the biggest myth we willfully believe is that chronic back pain will fade away eventually. It’s something we hope happens as we look ahead to the future. This is normally the case for young people with back pain; you like to think it’ll be gone by the time you’re older.
Without wanting to bring a downer on the situation, your pain will probably get worse and worse if it isn’t addressed. So, don’t assume you can just leave it and hope it subsides one day.
This may happen with some types of pain throughout your body, but chronic back pain tends to be more severe than most. Unless you suffered an injury, then the pain is likely to keep growing and growing, resulting in future issues like arthritis.
So, if you’ve been in pain for a long time, then you have to take action. See medical professionals and get their opinion on your situation. Ideally, try and get consultations with more than one expert so you can see if their views match up.
If everyone says you have a bulging disk or muscle imbalances, then you know that the problem must be that. From here, you can get the treatment you need to cure the pain.
Don’t be fooled by some of the fake information out there on this topic. Well, it might not be fake, but it’s more of a generalization of things. Too many people see ‘back pain’ as one single issue.
In reality, it can refer to many different problems, all of which are treated differently. Hopefully, this guide helps you get on the right treatment path to move towards better health!
