Imperfection as art and Perfection as not as beautiful, hmm that gives us pause, yes?

Perfection vs imperfect life? My life as art that is not in any way perfect. Whoa, wait a minute! Imperfection as art and a celebration of who we are,  just as we are. Really?

What if we could see that living in imperfection as art is our celebration of self? The fact that we as humans so want and strive for something that does not exist, somehow keeps confounding our path. The Japanese have a word for this. It is called Wabi-sabi.

WABI-SABI , THE JAPANESE VIEW OF IMPERFECTION

‘In traditional Japanese aesthetics, Wabi-sabi (侘寂) is a world view centered on the acceptance of transience and imperfection. The aesthetic is sometimes described as one of beauty that is “imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete”. Wabi comes from the root “wa” which means harmony, peace, tranquility and balance. Sabi means “the bloom of time.”Wikipedia

Isn’t this concept so empowering? In other words, I no longer have to strive for perfection! That in my lovely, shall we say, imperfection I can find unbelievable creativity and beauty to celebrate. Now that really gives me pause.

So all this time I have been running around trying to catch my own tail!

I completely missed the point!

So it doesn’t matter that I do not fit the societal definition of beauty. Or that my mode of transportation might be a wheelchair. Or that my hair looks weird.

Or my body is not 22 years old. Or that I speak in a very soft tone.

Because my differences make me wabi sabi! I am beauty in my own imperfection. And we are all beautiful. That beauty is a celebration of all that we are. For we have lived these moments to bring us to our own imperfection.

There is a page on Pinterest showing examples of broken bowls that are put back together using pure gold to fill the cracks.  Isn’t that mind boggling and loving? In other words those broken spaces are so lovingly filled with a most precious commodity because each imperfection deserves love.

When do we learn to treat ourselves that way? LIVING IN IMPERFECTION?

And if we are willing, to live in the harmony, peace and tranquility of our own heart- centric living. A new path is being forged. One that is not determined by the perfection, but rather the sweetness of accepting that we are so imperfect.

Without judgment, derision or sarcasm. Wabi-sabi is the art of perfectly accepting who we are. We are enough. It allows us to understand that our life cycle is very natural in its sense of seasons, cycles, growth and decay. Indeed, life is not always perfectly full of grace. Yet we can see it as graceful and gracious.

Doesn’t that then allow us to life more fully in our true authentic self? Perhaps it is also the art of de-cluttering our lives. Knowing what is needed, what is important. And how to give up all that construct of judgement and categorizing. After all am I imperfect because I have wrinkled hands? Or do those hands show the beauty of the life I have led?

It feels like such freedom to know that the concept we live with in the western world of perfection is illusionary. That although we might find ways to strive for it, it is not what our true hearts are wanting.

So in this space of imperfection I can so see the beauty, can you?

“The bloom of time’ is so poetic. When we give time its due, and patience, indeed we bloom. Because, we have given the due nurturance.

I don’t know about you, but that gives me great satisfaction, mixed with genuine awe. We can really see our lives of imperfection as a masterpiece of great art and creativity.

 SUMMARY OF IMPERFECTION AS ART

So here we are striving for perfection when in reality it is the imperfection that is so beautiful! And we have almost missed the point.

I so do like the concept that who we are is truly enough. We are enough We are lovely as we are. Even if the externalized world does not see it. That does not matter. We know that our beauty is from within that deep well of our own inner truth of goodness and love. Yes?

And how easy is it to say that we can no longer subscribe to what is the societal explanation of  beauty or perfection is? Because it does not take into account that as individuals we are indeed living in our own glow. No matter how scattered that glow is! For beauty and imperfection is how we choose to define it.

My definition? Beauty is our glow and our choice to be loving. No matter what.

So do go out there in the world and just know your definition of imperfect is perfectly wonderful to me. Because beauty is in the cracks and crevices of our lives and hearts, yes?
