Choose the Right Place to Live
Your choice of place to live can make a difference to your health, and to how well you’re able to connect to the local community. In some neighborhoods, people are more likely to keep to themselves or could even be hostile. But many people want to be able to get along with their neighbors.
That’s why a lot of people choose an independent living community when they’re older. You can get any help you need, but still have plenty of opportunities to socialize with others and participate in activities. If you’re moving home, it’s worth checking out your neighbors and seeing what sort of things are happening.

Take Part in Community Events
Belonging to a community that runs events you can take part in is a great way to stay connected and to really participate in your community. Community events can come in all shapes and sizes, and you might contribute in different ways.
You might just buy a ticket or attend, but there are often ways you can do your bit in other ways. For example, you might perform at an event or make something for a bake sale. You could help to organize an event or even spearhead the organization of an event.
And check out your local activities newspaper to see what communities are forming and go try out these options. In many communities there are meet-ups where you can get together with like minded people and even start forming your own groups and activities.
In fact another way to meet people is to participate in community gardening. So check out those options too.
Find Your Tribe
Finding a community that you feel you can connect with can sometimes be tricky. Some people join a church, while others might join a neighborhood group, but perhaps you’re not interested in things like that.
If you want something that caters more to your interests, you can find something you enjoy doing, maybe be trying out a few new things. It’s all about not just finding something you like, but also finding people you feel you can connect with.
And this is a major point. In wanting to engage in a new community we need to really feel comfortable with the people we are seeing. So take time and find ways to engage that will help make a decision if this what you want.
Also, know that if you are not enjoying this particular community there is no obligation. Do go try out several communities until you find that which truly makes you feel connected. After all it is the connection that makes us happier and healthier, yes?
Contribute Your Skills and Knowledge
Another way to engage with a community in a healthy way is to contribute your skills and knowledge. You can offer your abilities, whether you charge or you do it for free, so that you feel you’re contributing to your community in the way you know best.
It can help you feel useful and appreciated, and could help you meet people you wouldn’t normally connect with.
You might even end up bartering your skills with other people or running a business.
Connecting with a local community could make you a happier and healthier person. It doesn’t take much to start getting involved.
Once we are ready to start our search for community, we also need to decide how involved we want to be. Are we looking for a live in community or a place to pop into several times a week? Making these decisions help to give us a better understanding of what we need and want.
Deciding to be part of a healthy thriving and vibrant community not only makes us feel more healthy, but it adds to our sense of life. It adds more friends and brain power and basically knowing we are looking forward to activities and options.
How do you see your options? Are you interested in forming community? Is it something you have been thinking about? Do you know what criteria you want for community?
All of these question help you to find the fit that will indeed bring you greater happiness and a very strong feeling of vibrancy and health.
I wish you great connections!
